The birth of your baby should be one of the most exciting events in your life. With the guidance of our GPs and nurses, we provide a comfortable, comforting and caring centre for you and your new baby. All members of our team are able to help with pre pregnancy and initial antenatal care. Some of our GPs are interested in & have further training in providing antenatal care for the duration of your pregnancy and postnatal period.
A “Shared Care GP” is a General Practitioner with additional training in obstetrics, who is appointed by the hospital to provide complete pregnancy care to public patients who are not seeing a private obstetrician. Our shared care GPs work in collaboration with Lyell McEwin, Modbury and Women’s & Children’s Hospitals to provide routine antenatal care.
You will be seen by your Shared Care GP every month for the first six months, fortnightly for the next two months and then every week for the last month- this schedule varies according to whether you are in your first or subsequent pregnancy and your progress during the pregnancy. Your Shared Care GP will arrange recommended blood tests, ultrasounds, hospital visits etc. during this time. You will be referred to the relevant hospital, where you will have about 2-4 visits over the duration of the 9 months. This will be where delivery will take place, usually by a midwife, plus care for the baby and mother whilst in hospital. This way, both the hospital and your Shared Care GP are kept fully informed of your progress i.e. they "share" the care of you.
The benefits of this include your Shared Care GP being available at short notice, having your visits at convenient location to where you live or work, follow-up care of both you and your new baby when you get home postnatally (including vaccinations) and most of all, continuity of care which encourages a trusting relationship to develop.
Our Shared Care GPs are: Dr Sunita Thavarajadeva and Dr Eleanor Burton
If you are doing GP Shared Care during your current pregnancy and need to be seen urgently, please mention "Shared Care" to our receptionist. We will endeavour to fit you in with your usual or one of our team of Shared Care GPs.
